Hot Town, Summer in the City

Michael Palin once said, “Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life”

And this is absolutely true. But there are some points in life when the bug is so beyond insatiable that on Wednesday, you up and decide to book a flight for Friday. Before you’ve even really been able to digest that you’re traveling, you’re touching down in….New York City for the weekend!

I am the first to admit I am a sucker for urban sprawl. There is nothing like getting lost in a city, drinking in all it has to offer. And the city has always been on my list obviously, but being so close to us it took a back seat. We knew we’d get there, so we waited. Places like Chicago and Denver took precedence. We picked adventures that were further away and required much longer flights. But with two days to plan this, a weekend to spare, and an hour flight away….NYC was calling!

We were on a 5:30 PM flight out of Raleigh on a little puddle jumper, and it was dark by the time we got a cab into the city. Unable to see too much of our surroundings, we hopped out onto the street and into our hotel. And holy. crap.

The citizenM Hotel is EVERYTHING. Packing a lot of modernity and funk into small spaces, this hotel also has the biggest beds I have ever slept on that literally take up the entire room. They sit right under a floor to ceiling window that gives you one AMAZING cityscape.

The lobby is adorned with eclectic pieces and set up in a way that makes it feel cozy and homey-the bar was so easy for us to settle into at night!

dsc_0757dsc_0758dsc_0756I can’t reccommend citizenM enough. It’s very central with a train station right on the corner, far enough away from Times Square to avoid the chaos but a close enough walk to make the obligatory touristy trek!

The first night was a blur. The city is incredibly overwhelming and overwhelmingly incredible, and with my cousin as our guide we didn’t have to do too much planning. With the added effects of the first day off night shift weighing me down, I’ve got more pictures than information. Not having to plan everything out and being guided by someone else certainly takes the pressure off, and you can just enjoy the ride!

With that being said, behold. A seriously well deserved sushi roll after walking all the way to Chelsea sight seeing at 10 PM. I have no idea where this was or where to tell you to find it. But that’s kind of the way it goes in New York! Streets go on and on and sprawl forward, you can find yourself something delicious just about anywhere you turn!

After dinner it was time for drinks. And here’s another point for citizenM-their rooftop bar!

The photos say it all. Also, a VERY big perk is that this bar is for hotel guests only-no overcrowding or waiting!

Saturday morning consisted of breakfast at a little french cafe near Central Park, and sightseeing a few of your New York tourist staples 🙂

We walked until our feet hurt and took in all the city has to offer. A warm and sunny day perfect for wandering!

One can’t come to New York and not see a show, correct? So it was time to see a show. And we managed to find ourselves at the Richard Rogers Theatre for none other than….

This show really doesn’t even need a review. I don’t know what to say, but if you get the chance to see it (Also in Chicago and now touring in San Francisco and Los Angeles later this year!!!), SEE IT. An incredible recount of one of our lesser known founding fathers. An adaptation of history into a hip-hop musical with so many relevancies to today. I don’t even know what to say. Just go.

And then sometimes your cousin works in the theatre industry in NYC, and you get to go onstage after the show!!!!! FANGIRLING TO THE MAX AND RELIVE THIS EXPERIENCE AT LEAST 1,000X IN MY HEAD A DAY I MEAN WHAT??? IS THIS REAL LIFE????

We spent mid morning here. A tough place to visit, sombering, but such a beautiful commemoration.

dsc_0751And that’s a wrap! A quick and perfect first trip to New York. We love you and can’t wait to return!
